The Circle Inspectors, Sub Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors of Police, Head Constables and constables are now given washing/clothing/dress allowance at uniform rates of Rs.50 per month. The Sub inspectors and the subordinate officers / men are provided with stitched uniforms once in a year. For the Inspectors an allowance of Rs. 700/- is granted once in seven years.
55 officers and 1056 men (constables) of the district (including District Armed Reserve) have been provided with Government quarters, while 92 officers and 618 constables are yet to get this facility. There is also a Police Benevolent Fund which helps the police personnel in various ways. Monthly subscriptions are collected for this from the executive and ministerial staff. As at the end of June-2006 the subscription collected from the police officials is Rs. 1,01,940=00 and the expenditure as on 30th june 2006 is Rs. 97,175=00 and the balance on hand is Rs. 5,18,592=00. The fixed deposit is Rs. 32,52,033=00. These amount is being spent on items such as monetary relief’s, remuneration to tailoring teachers, newspaper subscriptions, audit of accounts, and health centre.
The following are the other police welfare activities in the district:
Three reading rooms and a library are being maintained. A reading room and the library are at the District Armed Reserve Lines, Shimoga, while there is a reading room at the Circle Police Lines, Shimoga, and at the Police Sub-Division Office at Sagar. In addition, every police station is provided with Kannada daily newspapers.
Some of the police lines are supplied with radio sets.
There are two health centers at the District Armed Reserve Lines, at Shimoga & Bhadravathi. They are run with the assistance of the Voluntary organizations. Physician visit these centers once in a week.
A children’s park is being maintained at the District Armed Reserve Lines, Shimoga. Three tailoring units are functioning at Shimoga & Bhadravathi.
Two laundries and two hair-cutting saloons have been set up at the District Armed Reserved Lines at Shimoga and Bhadravathi.
A community hall has been constructed at the District Armed Reserve headquarters at Shimoga.
There are two recreation centers at the District Armed Reserve Lines at Shimoga and Bhadravathi, which have been provided with carom boards, harmoniums, tables, kanjiras, etc.
The small savings scheme organization got constructed an open-air theatre at the DAR headquarters Shimoga, for conducting cultural programmes. This is being maintained by the Police Department.
A special Nutrition Centre has been opened at the District Armed Reserve Lines, Shimoga, for the benefit of the police children. They are being provided with free milk and upama.
Boys Battalion:- About 42 boys of police men son’s are being given physical training for forming a boys battalion.
